Quantum Computing Club (QCC)

Introduction

Quantum Computing Club is a students’ research society at NED University of Engineering and Technology. Our main focus is the establishment of a study and research platform that promotes Quantum Computing knowledge. Our goals include development in the field and spread awareness. Quantum Computing is the emerging field in today’s technology era. QCC therefore, aims towards an institution for collective learning between researchers and students internationally. Following the respective aim, members of QCC represented Pakistan on IBM Qiskit Advocate Page as well as on IBM’s May4 Global Quantum Challenge. Also, we are dedicated towards further growth of the team. All the computing enthusiasts and Quantum students or experts around the nation who wish to be a part of an evolution of this new era of technology, those who wish to make efforts on international basis and would like to commit to our aims are welcomed with high regards by the Club.


What is Quantum Computer?



Quantum computing is the use of quantum-mechanical phenomena such as superposition and entanglement to perform computation. Computers that perform quantum computations are known as quantum computers. Quantum computers are believed to be able to solve certain computational problems, such as integer factorization (which underlies RSA encryption), substantially faster than classical computers. The study of quantum computing is a subfield of quantum information science.

Rather than store information using bits represented by 0s or 1s as conventional digital computers do, quantum computers use quantum bits, or qubits, to encode information as 0s, 1s, or both at the same time. This superposition of states along with the other quantum mechanical phenomena of entanglement and tunneling enables quantum computers to manipulate enormous combinations of states at once.

IBM and Google are racing to create a truly useful quantum computer. Here's what makes quantum computers different from normal computers and how they could change the world. Quantum computing could change the world. It could transform medicine, break encryption and revolutionise communications and artificial intelligence. Companies like IBM, Microsoft and Google are racing to build reliable quantum computers. China has invested billions. Recently, Google claimed that it had achieved quantum supremacy the first time a quantum computer has outperformed a traditional one.

Quantum computers aren’t just about doing things faster or more efficiently. They’ll let us do things that we couldn’t even have dreamed of without them. Things that even the best supercomputer just isn’t capable of. They have the potential to rapidly accelerate the development of artificial intelligence. Google is already using them to improve the software of self-driving cars. They’ll also be vital for modelling chemical reactions. Right now, supercomputers can only analyse the most basic molecules. But quantum computers operate using the same quantum properties as the molecules they’re trying to simulate. They should have no problem handling even the most complicated reactions.

Quantum computers will find a use anywhere where there’s a large, uncertain complicated system that needs to be simulated. That could be anything from predicting the financial markets, to improving weather forecasts, to modelling the behaviour of individual electrons: using quantum computing to understand quantum physics. Cryptography will be another key application. Right now, a lot of encryption systems rely on the difficulty of breaking down large numbers into prime numbers. This is called factoring, and for classical computers, it’s slow, expensive and impractical. But quantum computers can do it easily. And that could put our data at risk.
